Eye doctor Grand Central

As part of your comprehensive eye exam at Madison Avenue Eye Care, our eye doctor Grand Central expert optometrist and owner, Dr. Alan Kurfirst will measure your intraocular pressure. Intraocular pressure is the eye pressure that is found inside your eyes; elevated eye pressure is often associated with glaucoma.

When you come to our optical practice, part of your eye exam will include a measurement of your eye pressure. This is an extremely fast and painless test that only takes a matter of seconds. If our eye doctor Grand Central finds that your eye pressure is higher than normal, additional tests may be need to be performed to see if you actually do have glaucoma. Elevated pressure inside the eyes is considered to be the most important risk factor for glaucoma. Differences in the pressure between your two eyes has also been associated with certain types of glaucoma, as well as with retinal detachment and iritis. Intraocular pressure can also be higher than normal due to anatomical problems, genetic factors, inflammation of the eye, or even as a side effect from taking certain medications. Intraocular pressure can be increased during glaucoma because when a patient has glaucoma fluids have problems draining from inside the eye, and this causes a fluid built up. It is important that patients have eye exams on a yearly basis so that this important test, and other eye tests can be run. If glaucoma is diagnosed early, it can often be treated with medicated eye drops. However, if glaucoma is not diagnosed and is left to progress, a patient can develop problems to the optic nerve which will hurt their vision. Unfortunately, vision loss to glaucoma cannot be restored, and glaucoma treatment focuses on preventing advancement of the disease.

Astigmatism in Midtown

Midtown Optometrist

Midtown Optometrist

If you are experiencing headaches when you read for a period of time, you may have astigmatism. Astigmatism is a refractive error which can be diagnosed at our vision practice, Madison Avenue Eye Care. When you come in for a comprehensive eye exam which includes screening for refractive errors, you will be seen by our Midtown optometrist, either Dr. Alan Kurfirst, our Owner and optometrist, or Dr. Paul Kantrowich, our Independent Optometrist.

When you see our Midtown optometrist for a comprehensive eye exam, your eyes will be screened for many different eye diseases and disorders and your visual acuity will be tested. During this part of the eye exam, our eye doctor will determine whether or not you have astigmatism. If you have astigmatism, it is nothing to worry about. It is a common eye condition that can be easily corrected with eyeglasses or contact lenses. You can even have laser surgery which will correct your astigmatism. When a person has astigmatism, it simply means that they have unequal curvatures of the cornea. It can also occur in combination with other refractive errors such as nearsightedness, or farsightedness; or, a patient can simply have astigmatism. However, the bottom line is that astigmatism will cause you to have blurred vision. When a patient has astigmatism, the eye is actually shaped more like a football so that when light enters the eye, it is refracted more by one curve than the other, causing the image to become blurred. Astigmatism can be inherited, or can develop as a person ages and grows. If you have astigmatism, you can have frequent headaches when trying to read, experience fatigue, eye strain, and blurred vision. It is very common for school-aged children to have astigmatism, so they should also come in to see our eye doctor for an eye exam, as well.

This means that you will not need to have reading glasses as well in order to see clearly close-up. In addition, progressive lenses have no lines of delineation between different prescriptions, so they are extremely attractive and provide a wider field of vision.

We look forward to seeing you at our Grand Central optical store the next time you are purchasing a new pair of eyeglasses, or need a comprehensive vision exam.

When you book yourself for eye exams and vision screenings, the procedures may include slit lamp examinations, dilated eye exams, refraction for glasses and contact lenses, and glaucoma pressure testing. If you’re concerned for the health and maintenance of your vision, don’t hesitate; call Madison Avenue Eye Care and book yourself for your first eye exam and vision screening with a Midtown eye doctor today!

Diabetic eye examinations in Midtown NY

Midtown NY optical

Midtown NY optical

If you have diabetes it is important that you have periodic eye exams to make sure that you are not developing diabetic retinopathy, or other serious eye diseases. For the very best eye care, we urge you to visit us at Madison Avenue Eye Care where you will be seen by our expert owner and optometrist, Dr. Alan Kurfirst. At our Midtown NY optical store, patients can also purchase a pair of great designer eyeglasses.

People who have diabetes, run a risk of developing serious vision problems. If you have consistently high levels of sugar in your bloodstream, you may develop eye problems caused by damage to the blood vessels that surround the retina. When these blood vessels become damaged or abnormal due to this high blood sugar level, the problem is known as diabetic retinopathy. Diabetic retinopathy is an extremely serious vision problem; it is the leading cause of blindness in working-aged adults. In the early stages of diabetic retinopathy, the patient may not have any symptoms that they are aware of. If macular edema occurs, vision can become intermittently blurred. If abnormal blood vessels develop and grow over the retina, they can bleed and cause large floaters which can obscure the vision. If a large hemorrhage occurs in the eye, vision will become very blurred, and in this case, the patient should immediately see our eye doctor. Diabetic retinopathy can be easily diagnosed by a comprehensive eye exam at our Midtown NY optical practice. Our optometrist will dilate the pupil, and be able to view your retina using an ophthalmoscope. Sometimes if diabetic retinopathy is found, additional testing will be required to determine the exact extent of the problem. In order to prevent diabetic retinopathy, the best thing to do is to maintain strict control of your blood sugar levels. When problems are found, laser eye surgery is generally the first line of treatment. The goal of laser therapy is to prevent additional vision loss.

Eye Pressure Grand Central

What Eye Pressure Can Mean in Grand Central

Eye Pressure Grand Central

Eye Pressure Grand Central

We all hear a lot about pressure these days, pressure in the form of stress and anxiety and high blood pressure. However, you don’t often hear about another pressure problem that our bodies may have to deal with – ocular hypertension, pressure in the eyes. This is a higher than normal intraocular pressure that can lead to serious problems if not treated. According to research, 4.5 – 9.4 percent of Americans have ocular hypertension. High eye pressure Grand Central can be diagnosed and treated by the doctors at Madison Avenue Eye Care. Since there are no outward symptoms of ocular hypertension only a comprehensive eye examination with visual field testing can pinpoint the problem.

During the exam our doctor will measure the patient’s eye pressure Grand Central, any reading over 21 mmHg (millimeters of mercury) considered to be an indication of ocular hypertension. The danger of ocular hypertension is that it can develop into glaucoma, a serious eye disease that is one of the leading causes of blindness. The majority of patients with ocular hypertension will not have glaucoma but about 10 – 15 percent will develop primary open-angle glaucoma, the most common form of the disease. Since glaucoma also has no overt symptoms until it starts to cause vision loss anyone with ocular hypertension has to be regularly monitored to check for developing glaucoma.

Eye pressure Grand Central is usually caused by an excessive amount of fluid in the eyes, due to either the tear ducts producing too much fluid or the eye’s inability to drain off sufficient fluid to keep the intraocular pressure low, or a combination of both. There are a number of treatments that our doctor can recommend including the use of medicated eye drops. This is usually the first treatment used but the drops can have side effects, so often in milder ocular hypertension cases our doctor will recommend waiting and monitoring the situation before prescribing drops. If the condition worsens or glaucoma starts to develop laser surgery to open the eye’s drainage ducts is often used, conventional surgery is also an option. Make an appointment with our office for a comprehensive eye exam.
